I finally broke down and made the move for the Canon 5D Mark II with the Canon 50mm f/1.2L lens. After playing with the 50mm 1.8 on my 50D, I totally got addicted. My new package greeted me after arriving home from my trip to Chicago this past Friday. I wish I had this with me for trip but this past Saturday and Sunday, I had a full two days test shots and beautiful weather.
Rocky (Nike Shanghai), William (Converse Basketball Shanghai) and Takashi (Converse Energy Shanghai) were in town so we did the usual NYC ritual for Roc and had chicken and waffles at Alias on Saturday. // Transitioning from the 50D 50mm 1.8 to the 5D 50mm 1.2 was pretty easy but the shots were noticeably nicer. Canon must have found a great sound designer to make the click and shutter sounds seem like each shot was perfect, its a great sound! But with fewer adjustments most shots came out pretty nice.
My buddy Steven also just got his new GF1 this week so Sunday we had lunch and took a short walk around SoHo for a few more test shots. The GF1 with the 20mm f1.7 is amazing, if I didn’t already have the Leica D-Lux 4 I’d totally get one. // The speed of the Canon 50mm f/1.2L definitely helped in capturing the flying pigeons picture, Steven also got a nice shot of the pigeons on the GF1. The Full Frame 5D captures about 40% more picture so even on a prime lens, you don’t really have to step back too much to get a full body shot or lunch mates sitting in front of you. I’m not a good photographer and I don’t know much about cameras but the bokeh of a 50mm prime lens is exactly what I love about photography. Hopefully with this expensive new package I’ll force myself to learn to use it more than the 50D.

Finally! My weekend test shots coming next. Peep the custom Supreme padded camera bag, 1/1!

This the first time I’ve seen one anywhere.
